UNC School of Law
Founded in 1845, the UNC School of Law is North Carolina’s oldest professional school, preparing outstanding lawyers and leaders to serve the people and institutions of the state, nation and world.
At the school, students learn the core subjects of the American legal tradition and master more specialized areas of law such as banking and finance, environmental law, intellectual property and civil rights under the guidance of our seasoned faculty. Students supplement their academic work with extracurricular activities by participating in more than 55 student organizations at the law school.
As Carolina celebrates its 225th anniversary this year, we’ll spotlight the ways the University is preparing our students to thrive in a dynamic society and how it is opening the doors for great minds to make transformative discoveries. Throughout the year, we’ll profile academic units, hear from deans and learn about programs that set Carolina apart from other universities.
We aim to educate excellent lawyers to work in private practice, certainly. But we also want our graduates take on the public service, nonprofit work and public interest practice that helps sustain the civic fabric of our state and our country

Carolina law students give back
UNC School of Law's Pro Bono Program allows Carolina law students to get hands-on experience by working on cases that range from helping cancer patients complete complex legal forms to securing humanitarian aid for refugee children and everything in between.
Understanding of the relationship between prosecutors and politics
The Prosecutors and Politics Project is designed to study the democratic checks that our criminal justice system places on prosecutors.
UNC School of Law launches entrepreneurship program
A $1.53 million gift to the school will provide hands-on training for the next generation of public-spirited lawyers and fill gaps in North Carolina’s entrepreneurship ecosystem by providing legal counsel for startup companies.
