Women’s tennis claims second straight ACC title

Carolina avenged two early-season losses and beat Virginia 4-0 Sunday at Cary Tennis Park to claim the program’s second straight ACC women’s tennis championship and 13th overall.

Earlier this season, the fourth-seeded Cavaliers beat the second-seeded Tar Heels in two separate 4-3 decisions. It was a different story with the conference championship on the line.

“We talked the whole tournament just making it about us. Make it about us, don’t make it about them, don’t make it about the things that we can’t control,” said head coach Brian Kalbas. “Ultimately, the message was just to compete. Just tried to make a statement that its about us and seeing how far we’ve come.”

The Tar Heels extended their winning streak to eight and have won 16 of their last 17 matches. Overall, Carolina sits at 23-4 heading into the NCAA tournament.

Carolina’s No. 1 doubles pair of Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton came out on fire, cruising to a swift 6-1 victory. The duo is now 21-2 this season. In a back-and-forth affair on No. 3 doubles, Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman pulled away to earn a 6-3 victory and clinch the doubles point for Carolina.

The Tar Heels have won the doubles point in 25 out of 26 matches this season.

In singles, Carson Tanguilig won a quick 6-0, 6-2 match as Carolina moved closer to a trophy. In the No. 6 match, Claire Hill also worked quickly to win 6-2, 6-0.

With the energy palpable, all sights turned to No. 1, where Brantmeier locked in to grab a 6-2, 6-1 win and clinch the sweep.

The selection show for the NCAA Division I Women’s College Tennis Championship is April 28.
