Angela Kashuba to step down as Eshelman dean

Kashuba, who’s served at Carolina since 1997 and as dean since 2019, will return to the pharmacy school’s faculty, Provost Chris Clemens announced.

Angela Kashuba
(Eshelman School of Pharmacy)

Dear Carolina Community,

I am writing to share that Angela Kashuba will step down as dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to return to the school’s faculty, effective June 1, 2025. Angela has been an extraordinary leader over the past five-plus years and has advanced the school as a global leader in pharmacy practice, education and research.

Angela joined Carolina’s faculty in 1997 and was named the John and Deborah McNeill, Jr. Distinguished Professor in 2013 and chair of the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics in 2015. She was appointed as dean in 2019, and during her tenure the school has been ranked the No. 1 pharmacy school in the nation twice in a row by the U.S. News and World Report. The school’s research enterprise has more than doubled and is now No. 1 among pharmacy schools in total research funding at $92 million in 2024. In 2023, the school was awarded the Research Triangle Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation, one of only five in the nation.

Under Angela’s leadership, the school closed out the largest campaign of any pharmacy school in the U.S. The school’s endowment increased by 38%, bolstering a best-in-class scholarship program that provides the most full-tuition scholarships among pharmacy schools in the country. Angela reinforced the school’s commitment to serving the state of North Carolina. In partnership with Carolina Across 100, the school launched the Rural Pharmacy Health Initiative to build the rural workforce and pilot innovative models of care to improve access and outcomes. During her tenure as dean, the number of applicants to the Pharm.D. program grew exponentially, and in 2024 alone the school experienced a 35% increase in the number of North Carolinians in the first-year class.

Last year, Angela received the Carolina Alumni’s Faculty Service Award, which honors faculty members who have performed outstanding service for the University. While serving as dean, Angela continued to lead her own lab focused on optimizing antiretroviral pharmacology in the treatment, prevention and eradication of HIV infection. She also serves in a leadership role for the UNC Center for AIDS Research. She is looking forward to focusing her efforts on teaching and scholarship.

Angela’s five-year review committee concluded that she has been an exceptional dean. I am grateful for her many contributions during her time as dean, and I am confident that the school is in a strong position for continued success. In the coming weeks, I will appoint an interim leader while we launch a national search for a new dean.

Please join me in thanking Angela for her outstanding leadership and wishing her the best as she returns to our faculty.

Sincerely,

J. Christopher Clemens
