The applied mathematics professor stressed the importance of community in accepting the honor Dec. 13.
“You’ve persevered and become even stronger,” Chancellor Lee H. Roberts told graduating Tar Heels at the Dec. 15 ceremony.
As interim coach this past season, Nahas led Carolina to its 23rd national championship and became the fourth Tar Heel to win a national title in their first year at the helm.

The 1,811 graduating Tar Heels had the chance at Winter Commencement on Dec. 15 to celebrate their achievements and all that went into earning a degree during their time in Chapel Hill.
The second-winningest coach in NFL history will lead the Tar Heels, pending approval by the Board of Trustees and UNC Board of Governors.
With a $190 million increase in research activity, the University is now among the top 10 U.S. research institutions.
The office partnered with Operational Excellence in campus-wide projects to ensure the efficiency of Carolina’s workstations.
