A message from the provost: Update on Department of Education executive order
In a message to campus, Provost J. Christopher Clemens writes about how the University is responding to changes at the Department of Education.

Dear Carolina Community,
Yesterday the White House signed an executive order instructing the federal government to begin to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. We know that this change may bring many questions about the fate of program funding as well as financial aid and assistance. From initial reports, some functions, including those related to student loans and Pell grants, are expected to continue. We are closely monitoring the situation and continuing to seek guidance from the federal government on how any potential changes might affect our University, students, faculty and staff, as well as the broader higher education community.
As a public, research-based institution committed to academic excellence and student success, we remain focused on our mission of providing high-quality education, conducting groundbreaking research and serving the Carolina community. University leadership and our federal affairs team continue to work with our Association of American Universities and Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities partners in higher education along with North Carolina state and federal government delegates to ensure that our University is prepared to navigate any policy changes that may arise.
Our University leadership as well as staff in units around campus are working diligently to support our faculty and students while we navigate these uncertain times and will communicate specific information when we have it. In the meantime, continue to utilize the resources page on the Public Affairs website for the latest updates on the executive orders and links to the relevant departments.
Sincerely,
J. Christopher Clemens
Provost
